SYB is built to need as little about you as possible. This page covers the SYB app and the web edition at sybthenight.com/talk. It says what we collect, why, and how to delete it. Questions: savageyungblanc@gmail.com.
The short version
- No account wall: the app gives you a private anonymous ID instead.
- No tracking and no ads. We do not use the advertising identifier and we do not ask to track you.
- We do not sell your data.
- You can delete your account from inside the app, or from Settings on the website. The deletion section below explains what is removed and what may remain.
- On the website there is no sign-up either: your browser gets a private anonymous ID, only when you first tap or type, and there are no ads.
What we collect
Anonymous ID. When you open the app, Firebase Authentication creates a random anonymous ID for your device. It is not your name or email. If you choose Sign in with Apple, Apple confirms who you are to Firebase and we receive Apple's user identifier and the name you choose to share. We do not ask for your email address. On the website, Firebase Authentication creates the same kind of random anonymous ID in your browser, and keeps it in your browser's storage so the chat and your handle are there next time. It is created when you first tap or type, not when the page loads.
Your profile and content. Stored in Google Firestore under your ID: your handle, display name and avatar choice, your founding fam number if you have one, songs and clips you liked, your playlists, how long you have listened, who you blocked, your chat with SYB, and messages you post in the fam. We also keep your age confirmation (13 or older) and when you accepted the terms.
Reports. If you report something, we store the report and the message it points to.
Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store a push token for your device so we can tell you about new music. You can turn this off in Profile or in iOS Settings.
Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics for Firebase to see which screens and features are used (for example songs played, clips watched, messages sent). It runs without the advertising identifier. We do not use it to build a profile for advertising or to follow you across other apps or sites. On the website, advertising storage, advertising data and ad personalisation are always off and Google signals are off. Analytics storage stays off until you confirm the card in the chat; until then only cookieless page counts are sent. Firebase Analytics keeps a random installation ID in your browser's storage to count visits, and "Delete my data" on the website turns analytics storage off again. No message text is sent to analytics.
Device verification. To keep the service safe from abuse, Firebase App Check uses Apple's App Attest to confirm requests come from the real SYB app. On the website it uses reCAPTCHA Enterprise, a Google service that checks a request comes from a real browser. It loads when you first tap or type, and Google may use cookies and browser and device signals for that check under Google's own privacy policy.
Technical logs. Our servers and the file host see your IP address and basic request details when the app connects, as any service does. They are kept for a short time for security and fixing problems.
On the website
The web edition stores a few things in your browser, and a few on our servers:
- In your browser: your anonymous ID; a note that you confirmed you are 13 or older; the clips you liked; your clip sound choice; the fans you blocked (this list never leaves your device); and the day a daily message limit was reached. If your browser blocks storage the site still works, you just start fresh each visit.
- Where you came from: when a link carries campaign tags (such as utm_source) we keep them, and the name of the site that sent you (never the page address), in your tab until it closes, and send them with your first message so we can see which post brought visitors.
- On our servers, per anonymous visitor: when you first and last appeared, how many messages you sent, the campaign tags above, and a keyed one-way hash of your network address, used only to apply limits per network and to count visitors. We do not store the address itself in that record.
- Songs, clips and covers are served from Google Cloud Storage, which sees your IP address like any file host.
Chat with SYB
Your chat messages are sent to our servers, filtered for harmful content, and passed to OpenAI, the automated reply service we use to write SYB's answer; OpenAI processes it under its API terms. Only the message text and the recent conversation are shared, not your name or any account details. Replies are automated. Do not share personal details in the chat. The conversation is saved to your account so it is there next time. On the website the daily message limit is lower than in the app, and limits also apply per network.
The live stream
The Home tab in the app and the Live page on the website can show SYB's live stream, which is hosted by YouTube. On the website nothing from YouTube loads until you press play. When it plays, YouTube may process data under its own privacy policy. We load it in its privacy-enhanced mode.
Why we use it
To run the app: play music and clips, remember your likes and playlists, run the chat and the fam, keep them safe, send notifications you asked for, and understand which parts of the app people enjoy so we can improve them.
Who sees it
- Other fam members see your handle, avatar, founding number and the messages you post in channels. Nobody sees your chat with SYB.
- Our service providers who run the app for us: Google (Firebase and Google Cloud, including Firestore, Authentication, Functions, Analytics, Cloud Messaging and Storage), Apple (sign-in, notifications and App Attest), YouTube (live stream), OpenAI (the automated reply service described above), and for the website also Google reCAPTCHA (device verification), Google Cloud Storage (media files) and Vercel (website hosting, which sees ordinary request logs). They may only use data to provide their service to us.
- Authorities, if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. Analytics is kept for the limited period set in our Analytics settings, and is not tied to your handle or messages.
Deleting your data
In the app, open Profile, then Delete account. On the website, open Settings and my data and choose Delete my data; it runs the same deletion and also clears the website's storage on that device. We delete your profile, handle, chat history, likes, playlists, blocks and device tokens, and remove your sign-in. Your fam message text and identifying profile details are removed; a “[deleted]” placeholder can remain to keep conversations readable. Reports about an account may remain for safety with message text redacted. Deletion is permanent. See Delete your account for the steps and what is removed. If you cannot access the app, email savageyungblanc@gmail.com and we will help verify ownership and locate your account.
Your choices and rights
You can see, change or delete most of your data in Profile. Visit Privacy choices for profile and notification controls, deletion, and help making a data request. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California) you may also have the right to access, correct, delete or take a copy of your data, to object to how it is used, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Write to savageyungblanc@gmail.com and we will answer within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising.
Children
SYB is not for children under 13. The chat and fam need an age confirmation of 13 or older. If you think a child under 13 has used them, write to us and we will remove the data.
Where it is stored
Our providers run on servers in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires, transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and access to it is limited. No service can promise perfect security, but we take it seriously and fix problems fast.
Changes
If this page changes in a meaningful way we will tell you in the app. The latest version is always at sybthenight.com/app/privacy/.
